Students form an 'Interact' club

A group of students have recently started an 'Interact' club here at Helston Community College. Interact is a youth run club developed by the Rotary Club. It is a group of likeminded students who meet during lunchtimes to raise money and help charities. Every year, Interact fundraises for a local and an international charity, improving the lives of those in the community and those in other countries that are less fortunate than ourselves. This year, our international charity is Kisumu Children's Trust who run an orphanage in Kisumu, Kenya. Recently, the Children's Trust won some money to set up a new library and in Helston, we have been collecting books across the school to be sent over to the orphanage to help fill up their new library. The number of books donated was far more than the amount we originally anticipated, meaning that we needed to raise some additional money to cover the costs of postage. In order to do this, Interact provided the refreshments for this year's Sports Day on Wednesday 5th July. The refreshment stall proved to be a huge success: it was constantly surrounded by a hoard of hungry students and raised in excess of £100 towards the postage.

Interact is very grateful to everyone who donated food to be sold. We would also like to thank Tesco, who stored the 530 ice lollies in their freezers before we sold them; Miss Hurley-Gale who kindly let us use her tables for the stall and her room for storage of the food and all those who donated their second hand books to the orphans in Kenya.

Any students can join Interact. If they do want to get involved with other projects that develop teamwork, confidence and leadership skills, they are very welcome to join the meetings in the Conference Room (C13) every Thursday lunchtime.
