Year 13 Engineering Students Visit AP Diving

The Year 13 Engineering Tech Level students visited AP Diving in Water Ma Trout industrial estate on Thursday to learn about how scales of manufacture affects the choice of processes and equipment.  They had a full guided tour of the world leading diving equipment company, seeing the testing lab, product development and manufacturing.

The students were particularly interested in how the designers generate and sketch their ideas, moving to CAD and rapid prototyping, then onto a rigorous testing regime to ensure the item is compliant and exceeds safety regulations, or goes 'back to the drawing board' to further modify their designs.  Students were also fascinated by the sheer size and expense of some of the equipment that is in use 24 hours a day.

Just before departure the students were told of how AP Diving played a key role in providing safe clean air to Avatar movie Director James Cameron in his successful bid to dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench – 11,000 metres deep, where the pressure is 1000 times greater than at sea level!

This was a most informative visit to an outstanding local company, and a real inspiration to the Year 13 students providing an insight into Product Design and Engineering working together.
