Student success at the Cornwall Music Festival

The College was delighted to hear that one of our Year 10 students, Maia, won the flute recital class at the recent Cornwall Music Festival. She competed in two rounds against students from across the county and her performance of the 1st and 2nd movements of Vivaldi's flute concerto were so good that she was proclaimed the overall winner. Following this success, she was invited to play the Concerto again at the Gala concert on Saturday night, where she was granted the honour of closing the show. Helston College Gymnastics Team Success at the National Finals Competition

The Under 13 Girls and the Under 16 Mixed Gymnastics Teams travelled to Stoke on Trent at the weekend to compete in the National Finals of the British Schools Milano Teams Gymnastics Competition. It was an extremely busy weekend with some fantastic gymnasts from across the Country and some snow drifts! The Under 13 Girls Team included Morwenna Holbrook and Scarlett Thompson from year 7 and Ashleigh Price and Kaitlyn Standing from year 8. Helston Community College win STEM robot heat

Young engineers from Helston have made a splash in a competition to build the best underwater robotic vehicle. The team from Helston Community College triumphed in the south west STEM Challenge heats, which test skills in science, technology, engineering and maths. Held at Falmouth Marine School, the regional heat saw Helston competing against five other teams including from Penryn College and Truro High School for girls. The College will collect any dontations for a local memorial project

Three of the College's former Teachers, Mike Thomas, Isabel and Johnny Austin have recently been working on a project to raise sufficient funds to place an oak memorial bench for another former teacher, Mr George Shutter. The plan is to place the memorial outside of St Michael's Church in Helston. To date, the project has raised a significant sum of money but they are still a little short of their target for the memorial. The Cornwall Marine Network (CMN) and its Marine Academy have successfully secured funding for a 3-year project to collaborate with international partners and schools to facilitate access to marine activities for Year 10 pupils. By working with schools locally, partners aim to make more young people aware of the marine environment as a resource to protect and enjoy and as an exciting career path.
