Race for Life at HCC

A huge thank you to all those who helped to make Helston Community College's first Race for Life event such a success. Thank you to all the students and staff who took part and those helped to organise the event. The atmosphere was fantastic - well done! Sports Day - change of date

Helston Community College Sports Day will be taking place on Wednesday 4th July. The format of the Sports Day has changed this year and will feature more activities in which students can participate. These include football, endball, rounders and tug of war; as well as track and field-based athletics events. Due to the increased amount of events Sports Day will be a whole day event with all students expected to arrive at college wearing their PE kit ready for the activities. Students take part in EnergyQuest

Around 30 students from Year 7 and Year 8 participated in EnergyQuest. This is a nationwide STEM event promoted by Royal Dutch Shell and Young Engineers. The aim of the event is to promote STEM subjects and careers. The event started with a debate on the ever-increasing worldwide demand for power/energy, and how we can tackle this growing problem. The event then had a design challenge. Students had a practical challenge to make energy efficient buggies using capacitors as the source of energy. A stimulating and fun session was had by all. Year 11 Prom Photos now available

One of the College' ex-teachers, Mr Quilter took the photographs last week. They can be viewed at https://markquilterphotography.pixieset.com/ . Students and parents/carers can click on the Helston Year11 Prom link and enter the password they were given by Mrs Hurley Gale. If students need a reminder they should contact the College reception. Students and parents/carers are able to browse through the photos and choose to purchase prints or digital downloads if they desire. Interact beach clean enjoy the lovely weather!

The College INTERACT team have once again demonstrated social responsibility within the local community by organising and partaking in another beach clean. This time it was at the National Trust owned Gunwalloe Fishing Cove. However, there was a twist.... The INTERACT team wore masks which they had decorated as a reference to the 'Fergusons Gang'. Fergusons Gang was formed in 1927 and raised money and awareness for the National Trust. They presented the money that they raised for the trust in peculiar and extravagant ways. Consultation on a change to the timing of lessons

The College is planning to introduce a new timetable in September, which will reduce lesson length and allow more frequent contact with teachers. The aim is to replace the three lessons consisting of 100 minutes with four lessons consisting of 75 minutes. Whilst the overall amount of time students will be taught will not change, the planned changes will allow teachers to revisit topics more frequently, and include memory-based teaching strategies to enable students to develop the skills they will need for the new-style GCSE and Post 16 examinations. Year 6 Induction Days

The next stage of our induction procedure involves a 2-day visit to Helston Community College, during which your child will follow a timetable, experience lunch at College and will be involved with a series of workshops aimed at making their transition as easy as possible. Art students visit CAST

Just before half term, the Year 10 Fine Art GCSE class were treated to art works by two eminent international artists at CAST on Penrose Road.  In a purpose-build screening room they saw work by Steve Macqueen CBE, an English film director, producer, screenwriter, and video artist, who directed the Oscar Award-winning  '12 Years a Slave'. This film, Gravesend, is concerned with coltan, a vital component in mobile phones and other electronic items.
