Helston Phoenix Project recognised by MP

In the Autumn term, the Helston Phoenix Project applied for funding from the Tesco's 'Bags of Help' local community grant scheme. The proposal was put forward for the public to vote in December, with a first prize of £5,000.  We had over 7,000 votes and won the top prize!  As the first 'Helston' based project to win, Tesco's (Helston) invited us to receive our cheque last month. The money that we won, will provide holiday projects for students at Helston Community College.  This Easter, we are taking over twenty young people to Stithians Lake for a two-day activity.  We also have a two-day activity planned for the...

Post 16 Students visit Krowji

The Year 12 and 13 students took advantage of the Wednesday afternoon Art enrichment programme this week, when they had the opportunity to meet a range of professional artists and craftspeople at Krowji Art studios in Redruth. The students asked the artists questions about their practice and some even had the chance to have a go at screen printing with artist Paul Bawden. Further success for College Gymnasts

The Under 19 Girls Team had very stiff competition from 7 teams across the region. Shannon Standing, Freya Tatham, Phoebe Jenkin and Maea Morgan performed dynamic floor routines including some new moves and solid vaults. The team scored 118.90 and came 3rd in the competition. A great achievement by the girls. Joining Forces artwork now on display in the Museum

All of their artwork is now on display, alongside other local artisits in the Helston Museum. Joining Forces is a project delivered in partnership with Cornwall Museums, Helston Museum and Active Plus. It has been generously funded by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund and the Cornwall Councillor Community Chest Grant Scheme. The artwork exhibition is the result of nine creative workshops with five different community groups during January and February 2017; two Culdrose Community Centre groups, a group at The Clies, and pupils from both Helston and St Michael's Schools who worked with the artist, Tony Minnion. Southerly Point Co-operative Multi-Academy Trust update

As you are aware, the opening of the Multi-Academy Trust was postponed to allow us some additional time to obtain further assurances around financial details from Cornwall Council. This work is nearing completion but, as we are still awaiting one final paper, will not be completed in time for the proposed start date of 1st April 2017. In order to ensure all the processes can be finalised, it has therefore been decided to defer the opening date till 1st June 2017....

20:20 Sketchbook Exchange Project

On Monday 20th February, Helston Community College's Art Teacher, Sarah-Jane Marsden, launched 20:20 - a sketchbook exchange project between some of the College's most creative Year 10 students studying GCSE Fine Art or Art and Design, and local artists and craftspeople in the Helston area. Some of the artists involved include Constantine-based painter George Willoughby, community artist Jude Carroll, sculptor Tom Brook, Helston jeweller Julia Schofield, and textile artist and quilter Sara Price. Good News on the New Build

Over the next six weeks, the College is attending a series of client engagement meetings with companies hoping to gain the contract for the new build. The contract is due to be awarded in April. Towards the end of April/early May, there will be public consultation as part of the planning process, to which you will be invited.  The aim is that work on site will commence in September.
